AKOURDALIA
Arkoudalia is a village of two ‘halves’ enjoying a high elevation on the fringes of the Akamas Peninsula in north-western Cyprus, considered by many to be one of the last unspoilt wilderness areas of the island. As with many villages in Cyprus, Arkoudalia consists of an ‘Upper’ and ‘Lower’ settlement – ‘Ano’ and ‘Kato’. Both have stunning views over the Chrysochou valley towards the foothills of the Troodos Mountains, with the Mediterranean coastline a short distance away. Paphos and its international airport and full range of retail amenities are no more than 30 minutes away and the nearby town of Polis is closer still.
In common with neighbouring villages, Arkoudalia has a personality and ambience shaped by its location and environment – an oasis of calm and solitude. Tradition dictates a way of life where each looks after the other and the amenities of one community are very much seen as a shared resource with others. In this way, the intimacy of the village is not compromised by large scale developments or busy commercial activity.
Kato Arkoudalia is very much the old-style typical Cypriot village in outward appearance, complete with whitewashed houses; houses in Pano Arkoudalia tend to be more modern. There is no kiosk or shop but the village of Kathikas is only a few minutes’ drive away with some shops and hospitable tavernas to welcome you!
The Museum of Folk Art is situated high on the hillside displaying artefacts from years gone by, many of which relate to the agricultural activity of the area. On the outskirts of Kato Akourdalia is a track which leads to restored, whitewashed church of Ayia Paraskevi. Of cruciform style with a dome, the church was originally full of frescoes and is reputed to date from the 15th century. Simply decorated there is a stone altar inside with the remains of an old icon dedicated to Our Lady.
Arkoudalia is an ideal location is you want to get away from it all and leave the cares of the world to look after themselves.
