KRITOU TERRA
Approximately 20kms north of the bustling commercial and tourist centre of Paphos lies the village of Kritou Tera – an oasis of calm nestling 470 metres above sea level just a few kilometres to the north of Pano Arodes. A traditional Cypriot village, Kritou Tera is characterised by stone houses mingling with newer developments that blend sensitively with the natural environment. The old village school has been transformed into the Centre of Environmental Studies, researching the riches of the area’s natural environment.
The village enjoys an excellent vantage point on the approaches to the Akamas Peninsula and the wild beauty of this unspoilt wilderness area of Cyprus. The fertile landscape is rich in rare plant species, making Kritou Tera a natural place of interest for those keen to enjoy a perspective of Cyprus that differs from the more popular image of an island renowned for some of the finest beaches in Europe. The village is a world apart from Paphos, Coral Bay and other coastal resorts, which are all within convenient travelling distance – together with the Tsada golf course north of Paphos.
As a location for permanent living, Kritou Tera is likely to appeal to those inclined towards a lifestyle that is secluded rather than isolated. The wider area is undoubtedly one of scenic contrasts – combining a rich tapestry of natural environment and village life that is uncomplicated and uncluttered with the trappings of urban living. Shopping and other amenities are easy to reach in neighbouring towns and villages.
The village offers ‘doorstep’ access to the Kritou Tera to Loutra tis Afrodites section of the E4 Long Distance Trail. This is one of the European long-distance walking paths starting in Spain and ending in Cyprus. For the keen hiker – or those wanting to experience the pleasures of walking – this is the ideal location for a ‘home base’. The magnificent Church of Chryseleousa, the old casino, the ancient French-Byzantine church of Ayia Ekaterini, the old wash-house, and the old water mill and its rich springs are worth a visit.
